Leslie Hyde, his parents’ only son, was a citizen of the United Kingdom but grew up in Toronto, attending the Model School Model School before entering UTS in 1910; he also studied at Saint Andrew’s College from 1912 until 1915. He and his best friend Robert Gordon Hamilton, neither of whom would survive the war, enlisted together in the 26th University of Toronto Battery and went overseas, where they both received commissions in the Royal Horse Artillery in October 1915. The Toronto Star noted that this was a rare honour for two men who were still so young. Later that month, Hyde received an operation in London, which he did not survive. He is buried in the cemetery of Saint John’s Abbey in Kilkenny, Ireland, where his grandparents were parishioners.
